Mayrhofen/Zillertal

This ski area extends along the Ziller Valley from Fugen right up to Hintertux and includes, effectively, Fugen, Hochfugen, Kaltenbach, Zell-am-Ziller, Gerlos, Mayrhofen, Lanersbach and Hintertux. Mayrhofen is, perhaps, the best known of these resorts and is probably the best place to stay for its lively nightlife and its easy access to the Hintertux glacier. Kaltenbach is now linked to Hochfugen and has deceptively extensive skiing, with some interesting, long runs and some accessible off-piste. Zell-am-Ziller is linked to Gerlos, a nice place to stay, with some lovely hotels. The skiing here is largely intermediate and there are several long red runs. I travelled to Mayrhofen with Snowcoach. Their Chalet Tirol is ieally situated on the main street and their ski safari programme lets you explore several of the valley's resorts in a week. For apres ski, try Scotland Yard or Win-Win. Mo's is good for burgers and cocktails and the Cafe Tirol serves good food at reasonable prices. Manni''s serves some traditional dishes and several of the hotels have excellent restaurants. The ice bar at the foot of the Penken Gondola is a must for wilder spirits immediately after skiing but leave before throwing out time.
