This is the place to exercise both your skiing and gambling skills, being situated on the California/Nevada border.
The lake is surrounded by ski areas - Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Incline, Holmwood, Sierra and Kirkwood are just some of the resorts within easy striking distance of the lake.
Most skiers stay at either South Lake Tahoe (for Heavenly) or North Tahoe (for Squaw). Neither is particularly attractive but accommodation is plentiful - from the cheap and cheerful motels to the plush Casino hotels.
Each of the ski areas is small by European standards (with the possible exception of Squaw) but the availability of so many resorts within an easy drive of each other makes this a good area to explore.
For exciting runs try The Wave and anything off the Cornice lift at Kirkwood. Burn Out at Northstar is a very fast cruise, for good skiers only in icy conditions. Squaw has numerous difficult runs (try those off KT 22).
For long cruises, the Nevada side of Heavenly is good, and Ridge Run (at the same resort) has heavenly views of the lake as well as being a super blue/red run. The runs down to Heavenly's California base are difficult, unless conditions are excellent, though it's better for good skiers to take these rather than the long, winding path, which is usually full of the bodies of adventurous beginners.
